This story was a collaboration between the graphics, photo, and video desks at NBC News. It weaves together maps, images, and sound to document the magnitude and emotional complexity of the refugee crisis in Ukraine. I wrote this story and led its creative development: from collating the data and media, speaking with our sources, and coordinating editing with the photo and video desks. I collaborated with my colleagues on the maps and technical development.

Snapshots

For those who remain and those who have returned, the day-to-day can be unfathomable. Liubov Tsybulska, a violinist in Kharkiv, passes the time in a bomb shelter by turning to her music. In the near dark of the shelter, and sometimes with a clothespin to muffle the sound, she plays.

“This is what we do in bomb shelters when they bomb us from the sky.”
